WRITING INTRODUCTIONS for IELTS TASK 2

Writing  an introduction for Academic IELTS Task 2 can be done easily by following three steps

1. Start with a general statement about the topic.

2. Narrow the topic.

3. End your introduction with a thesis.

TIP!

You need to paraphrase the instructions in the introduction, you shouldn’t repeat whole sentences.

Look at the following example of an introduction to the task below:

Some people say that the education system is the only critical factor to development of a country. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

1. general statement

Education is believed to play a vital role in the development of a society.

2. narrowing the topic

It is even considered the only factor which may contribute to the growth of a country.

3. thesis

I would suggest that the issue merits more careful consideration.

THREE MORE EXAMPLES:

Topic: Many people believe that formal examinations are not the best method of assessing educational achievement. What is your view of examinations?

General statement:

Examinations are one of the most commonly used methods aimed at measuring learning in education systems. 

Narrowing topic:

The learner’s readiness to move on to the next stage is virtually verified at every stage of the learning process. 

Thesis:

In this essay, I will argue that the role of examinations is overrated. 

Topic: As languages such as English or Spanish become more widely spoken, there is a threat that minority languages may die out. Some countries are trying to protect them. What is your view of this practice? 

General statement:

Since the world becomes more integrated, the necessity of finding common means of communication is one of the most pressing.

Narrowing topic:

As a result speakers of minority languages are pressurized to use languages different from their mother tongue.  Some people claim that there is not much to be done to stop this process.

Thesis:

In my view, the issue merits more careful consideration. 

Topic: Longer life and improvements in the health of older people suggest that retired people can continue to live active lives. In what ways can society benefit from the contribution that the elderly can make?

General statement:

Over the last century the lifespan has doubled.  

Narrowing topic:

This means that retired people can enjoy longer and healthier lives and they often see reaching retirement age as a time for relaxation. However,  many pensioners are increasingly interested in contributing actively to the life of society.

Thesis:

This essay will outline the ways in which this interest can benefit society.
