PRESENTATIONS – English Business Skills

PREPARING YOUR SLIDES

If you are a skilled presenter, you can get your message across extremely effectively. A successful presentation, not only in English, requires a good deal of preparation.

Once you’ve decided on a template to use for your presentation (free templates available here), remember to keep the amount of text on each slide to a minimum. Use keywords only, and explain them during your talk. Make use of visuals such as images, short videos, graphs, and so on.

PRESENTATIONS – OPENING

Once you arrive at the place to deliver your presentation, remember about structuring it – it’s easier to follow it as audience. Do your homework and check who your audience is in order to adjust your style – formal or informal.

Don’t start your presention straightaway!

It is estimated that first few minutes of your presentation are lost because your audience is not listening to you yet.

Try to use some attention grabbers e.g.:

  • interesting statistics
  • rethorical question
  • eye-catching images
  • music, etc.

Now you can start your presentation.

Follow the pattern below and use these phrases to deliver your successful presentation:

  1. WELCOME

Ok, let’s get started. Good morning everyone and welcome to …

On behalf of ABC company, I would like to welcome you here

2. PERSONAL INTRODUCTIONS

Lets me start by introducing myself. My name is …

3. OBJECTIVE / GOAL

The title of my presentation is …

I’m going to talk about …

The aim of this talk is to …

4. STRUCTURE

I’ll speak for about 20 minutes.

I’ve divided my talk into 3 main parts.

First, I’d like to …

Then/Secondly, I’ll talk about …

Finally, I’ll move on to …

If you have any questions, feel free to interrupt / ask them after the presentation.

While presenting, try to use THE RULE OF THREE, because the audience has short attention span and also remembers better if there is limited number of points. This rule will make your presentations short, simple and sweet.
