HEAD AND SHOULDERS – finance jargon

Every child knows the popular song which goes like this:

Head, shoulders, knees and toes
Knees and toes
Head, shoulders, knees and toes
Knees and toes
And eyes and ears and mouth and nose
Head, shoulders, knees and toes
Knees and toes

While singing, a child touches the parts which they sing about, it’s a simple pattern.

In Finance, this pattern refers to a certain situation on the stock exchange. So, what’s the pattern, and what does it refer to?

The „Head and Shoulders” pattern

Formacja głowy i ramion (żargon giełdowy)

a common term in stock market jargon, refers to a frequent stock price trend where shares first rise, then fall, followed by a more dramatic rise and fall, and finally, a smaller rise and fall. By the end of this cycle, the stock price generally ends up close to where it began, leaving investors feeling like they’ve been on a roller-coaster ride. This pattern is often identified by technical analysts or chartists, who may attribute it to market psychology and indecision among investors. Alternatively, it could simply be a random pattern that resembles a discernible shape.
